Waiting #99WordStories

This week at the Carrot Ranch, Charli Mills challenged writers to In 99 words (no more, no less), write a story about waiting. Where does this waiting take place? Does it have a past or a future outcome? Who is waiting and why? Go where the prompt leads!

For my response, I have tried to show that the waiting can feel different from different perspectives. I’m not sure if I achieved that, but I hope my story doesn’t gross some of you lovely readers out like last week’s ‘flakes’ story. 😂😉

I’m Bored

“For Christmas,” said Mum.

“But it’s a looooong time,” said Jamie.

“Not long enough,” said Dad. “Only three more pay days.”

“Wait till you’re my age,” said Grandpa. “It’ll be gone in a blink.”

“But there’s nothing to do,” said Jamie.

“When I was your age,” said Grandpa. “we’d be out all day, playing until dark.”

“Mum won’t let me go anywhere. Dad says no screens until after dinner. It’s boring.”

“Tell you what, kiddo. How’s about you and me take a walk and do some exploring. What d’you say?”

“Can I, Mum?”

“Sure. It’ll do us all good.”

Thank you blog post

Thank you for reading. I appreciate your feedback. Please share you thoughts.

Note: The collection of stories made in response to the previous prompt Flakes, including my gross one, can be read at the Carrot Ranch.

And just to let you know that life is pretty hectic for me at the moment so I may not get to visit you as often as usual, but I’ll still be thinking of you and will visit as often as I can. Thanks for your understanding.

you have a real talent with Charli’s prompts, and often from a kids angle 🙂

Sorry I’m not a regular visitor, hoping you’re well?

Thanks, Kate. I’m well, just lacking energy and motivation after a tough year. Starting to come round.
I hope you are well and enjoying 2024. Thanks for visiting and checking in on my absence.

something I’m not very good at, but now and then I do wonder about old friends … going up to Currumbin Saturday … you haven’t got time for a cuppa Sunday morning by any chance?

Very clever writing from you as usual, Norah. Waiting can seem endless, and the chance to do something different can seem very appealing. Your story here reminds me how so many kids look forward to gifts and the joys that come with celebrating Christmas. It’s a lovely time for many. I also really liked your last post, Flakes. I found that not only clever but humorous 😄

I hope you are enjoying summer and are having a wonderful end to the year. Wishing you well 😊

Hi Mabel, It’s lovely to see you. Apologies for the late reply. I’ve been busy offline and not had much time for the blogosphere the last few weeks. That situation will probably continue throughout 2024. I’m pleased you enjoyed both posts. I wish you much joy and lots of fun during the holiday season, especially as it stretches into the Chinese New Year celebrations for you. Have a wonderful year.

That’s true. But now I’ve reached the age when every day is a blessing and a milestone. 🙂

I was often bored. Didn’t do me any harm!! But the freedom to wander unconstrained is a treat and one of the losses of today’s nervousness.

That’s interesting that you were bored, often. Perhaps my memory fails me, but I thought there was always something to do. I do think we all, of any age, need spaces that give us time to think, create and choose something to do, even if it is just contemplate.

Nice job on the prompt, Norah. This made me think of a story my wife likes to tell about her grandfather on Christmas mornings. He would gather his grandchildren around him and say, “Take a good look, kids. I might not be here next year.”😊

Oh dear. Poor old Gramps. I wonder how long that tradition lasted. My husband loves to say that every new purchase ‘will see me out’. Frustrates me no end. 😉😂 I’ve no intention of being ‘out’ any time soon.

I thought your story last week was very clever. I like this one too. It is hard for modern youngsters because they don’t have the same freedoms we had.

It is hard for them, but waiting for Christmas was even difficult for me as a child when I had those freedoms. Back then, the years dragged from the beginning of the school year until the end. Now they flash by like kilometres on an odometer. Much too fast.
