Confidence #99WordStories

This week at the Carrot Ranch, Charli Mills challenged writers to In 99 words (no more, no less), write a story about confidence. Is a character confident or struggling? Why? Is confidence cultural, compelling, or conflicting? What is the value of confidence? Go where the prompt leads!

Having an ‘I can’ attitude, or confidence, is something I always encouraged in my children, whether I birthed them or taught them. Maybe because it was never encouraged in me and is definitely not a strong suit, I’ve always found it important to nourish. A story about confidence should have been easy to write. I’m sure I’ve written many stories about confidence before, but I just couldn’t get one to work. I finally realised that what I was trying to write was based on a true event. Maybe that’s why I couldn’t get the ending. I decided to go with an anecdote rather than fiction. I hope you enjoy it.

That’s Confidence

When Bec was little I ran play/educational sessions for children and their parents at home.  I worked hard preparing the room, dedicated for that purpose, for our sessions. Finally, everything was arranged, with various art and craft materials organised in boxes and tubs.

Bec, 2½ years old, was excited. ‘Of course,’ I said when she asked if she could make something.

I’d only moved away for a moment when her excitement drew me back: ‘Look what I made!’ Her face beamed.

She’d upended nearly everything (exaggeration, only slight) and glued one cotton ball onto a piece of paper. Wow!

Look what I made! © Norah Colvin

Thank you blog post

Thanks for reading. I appreciate your feedback. Please share your thoughts.

Note: The collection of stories made in response to the previous prompt A Blade of Grass, including mine, can be read at the Carrot Ranch.

That’s a cute anecdote. If only all children, especially girls, would retain that level of confidence. What a world it would be!

She was only little and very excited about all the possibilities. It’s always difficult to decide when there’s too much choice.

It was very cute and very funny, Debby, but not really how I intended the items to be used. 😉😂

I love this story! It rings so true. Also, I smiled when you referred to your children as those you gave birth to and those you taught.

I’m pleased you enjoyed the story, Jennie. I know you feel the same about the children you have taught. They never stop being ‘our’ children, do they?

She was pretty cute. Still is for that matter. While I wasn’t particularly proud of what she made in that instance, I’m enormously proud of her now.

Haha, Norah, I can commiserate. When I hosted all the children at my house for a play afternoon, it was like a bomb explosion afterwards. I may have mentioned it before, but one day, Greg and his gremlin brigade, I mean friends, caught a whole lot of grasshoppers in a jar and stored it under his bed. The lid fell off and the grasshoppers escaped. It took me years to be free of the grasshopper singing.

Oh my goodness! I don’t remember the grasshopper story, Robbie. What a nightmare. Or it sure would have been for my daughter. She’s terrified of grasshoppers. Something about being teased by a big brother when she was little! 🙂

He didn’t mean to scar her for life. He was a really good big brother to her.

Sorry, Norah, I didn’t realize how badly whatever happened upset her. I am quite sure it was meant in a light hearted way. Sometimes small kids just overreact to things.

Now, I’m sorry, Robbie. She’s not really scarred for life. That’s just an over-the-top expression we use. I don’t actually know what he did, perhaps was showing her a grasshopper and it jumped at her. Something like that. There was no evil intent. He was a lovely big brother. There’s 12 years between them. I guess it gave her a fright and she hasn’t liked them since – always blames him for it, but he didn’t really do anything. Just sibling teasing. I’m sorry for giving you a false impression.

Aw, thanks, Robin. You are so sweet. I thought this was so funny. If a fly had been on the wall it would have seen a look of pride on her face and aghast on mine. 😂😂😂 Never mind. We soon sorted it.
