Flash fiction – Innocence shattered

Here is my contribution to the seventh flash fiction challenge from Carrot Ranch Communications. I hope you enjoy it.

In 99 words (no more, no less) write a biography for a character, alter-ego or you.

Innocence shattered

She hurled it with such force that had it been his head, as she had wished it was, it too would have smashed into smithereens, just as the figurine had.

“You ab-so-lute monster!” she screamed.

She fell to the floor, sobbing uncontrollably.

All her life she had thought it was her; something wrong with her; she that was wanting.

But it wasn’t her. It was him. His wanting. His vile taking.

The repulsive visions made her want to turn inside out and eradicate any trace of connection.

Her ignorance had offered no protection; and now no solace.

My first thoughts are that it’s very dark. As a reader I like that there’s so much left open to my own interpretation, it’s only as dark as my own perception and yet I’d love to have had more to read. I’m one to judge a book by it’s cover (or it’s blurb) and right now you’ve got me captured wanting to delve in and read more.

  Thank you for your generous comment. I hadn’t thought of the 99 words as a blurb but i can see that it almost could be. One day I may take it further, but not just yet. Will you join in the flash fiction challenge too? It can be a lot of fun.

    I’m not sure I’m at all equipped to participate in the flash fiction challenge. My writing skills don’t extend that far. At the moment I’m more than happy to continue reading and enjoying your creations 🙂

        It’s true, there’s much in the works for my blog at the moment. It’s a battle just to get published posts out what with everything else behind the scenes. I’m hoping you’ll be joining the party every now and then when you’re feeling so inclined.

Had to laugh at Anne’s comment on ab-so-lute! Hmmm…connected by hyphens, good to call it one word! Powerful writing and so true. Often what occurs in childhood seems absolutely monstrous when revealed to the adult mind. That’s my interpretation. Very powerful.

  Thanks Charli. It is interesting, though, about the hyphens. When every word counts we have to make the most of them. It may have been a waste if the hyphens meant the word counted as three. Maybe the emphasis I was looking for would have had to be achieved another way?
