A Smear of Jam #99WordStories

This week at the Carrot Ranch, Charli Mills challenged writers to In 99 words (no more, no less), write a story about a smear of jam. Is it across a slice of toast, a white shirt, or something unexpected? The jam could be the focus or detail that ads a twist. Who are the characters with the jam and where are they situated in space and time? Go where the prompt leads!

This is my playful response. I hope you enjoy it.

A Smear of Jam

Teddy hoped heโ€™d get away with it. His paws were clean and his eyes unblinking as he crossed his heart and hoped โ€“ well, what could a teddy bear hope?

Ollie decided to have some fun. He overloaded the slow-thinking Teddy with questions faster than his processing speed.

โ€œAdmit it. You ate my jam.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€ Teddy crumbled. โ€œHow did you know?โ€

Ollie smiled. โ€œI donโ€™t need to be Sherlock. Youโ€™re the only one here. Besides, youโ€™ve a smear of jam on your nose.โ€

โ€œSorry, Ollie.โ€

โ€œNever mind,โ€ said Ollie. โ€œBut be honest next time โ€“ or hide all evidence.โ€ They laughed.

A sweet story worth spreading. I like how the stuffed animals carry on without the children, as we children know they do.

Sweet as jam on toast! A demonstration that a smear of jam, like a spoonful of sugar, leads to a delightful learning opportunity!

Hi Norah, this is adorable. My mom gave away my old teddy a few years ago and I was heart broken. She didn’t realise I would be upset, bless her!

Poor teddy. I’m sure he was heartbroken too. You can’t get him back?
