Something Shaggy #99Word Stories

This week at the Carrot Ranch, Charli Mills challenged writers to In 99 words (no more, no less), write a story about something shaggy. It can be carpet, a hair-do, or some sort of critter. How can something shaggy steer the story? Go where the prompt leads!

Charli wrote about a new shaggy duvet she had purchased. I couldn’t imagine having a shaggy duvet. It just wouldn’t be necessary where I live, and certainly not at this time of year. I can understand how delightful it would be in colder climes though and trust it will keep Charli warm.

At first, all I could think of was the shaggy hairstyles of yesteryear. Then I thought of those shaggy dog stories, those long rambling unfunny jokes, also from the past.  I wasn’t feeling the inspiration until Charli replied to my comment on her post. She said that her new duvet was ‘lovely warmth, not too heavy and oh-so-soft!’ It seemed like the Goldilocks complex and I thought I’d apply that principle to my Shaggy Dog story. I hope you enjoy it.

Shaggy Dog

“I want a dog,” said Jason.

“You’re in the right place,” said the attendant at Rescue Kennels. “We’ve all sorts of dogs. What sort are you after?”

“A shaggy dog, please.”

The attendant showed Jason the shaggy dogs.

“They need a lot grooming,” he warned.

“Oh. Not shaggy then. Curly perhaps?”

Jason shook his own curly head at the curly dogs. They’d need grooming too.

“How about short?” said the attendant.

“They’re awfully noisy,” said Jason, as they walked the aisles.

“They are dogs,” said the attendant.

“Right,” said Jason. “Do you have any cats? Maybe a shaggy cat?”

Thank you blog post

Cute, Norah. I love the twist at the end. Shaggy cats are a problem too. Long-haired cats get knots in their fur, and they are painful for the cat (and the owner who has to cut them out and get scratched for the effort). Give me a short hair cat any day.

I’ve never had a dog or a cat pet so I was making it up as I went. I’m pleased you enjoyed it though, Nan. 🙂

Indeed I did (enjoy your story), Norah. I am a cat person although there was one dog who absolutely loved tea. Callie would drool nearly every time we had a cuppa. We’d pour the last drops into her bowl and she’d lap it up. Pets can bring pleasure or pain. Fortunately, mostly pleasure, or there wouldn’t be as many pets as there are. Nan

I’m pleased to hear that pets bring more pleasure than pain, Nan. I’ve never been a pet owner. Other than a fish. Do they count?

Yes, Norah, fish count as pets, but in my case, my fish didn’t last too long. I think I was over zealous in feeding and caring for my goldfish. Alas…

I know what you mean. That’s why I didn’t mention the fish, the hermit crabs or the billabong bugs. I was disastrous for all of them. The only success I had was caterpillars. And not all of them made to butterfly-hood. 😉😂

Norah, even in nature, not all caterpillars make it butterfly-hood.

I suppose one of the great lessons of having a pet is the loss of the pet sometime in the (near) future. That may be the first death a child experiences before the larger losses of grandparents, parents, siblings, etc. No loss is ever easy, yet humans often convince themselves that death isn’t in the future. Too much philosophy for a Monday morning. Sorry!

By the way, what is a billabong bug?

No time is the wrong time for philosophy. I don’t mind you sharing your Monday morning musings.
I can’t really tell you what a billabong bug is, because I had no success with them! 😂 They came in a packet like sea monkeys. They really are little creatures, I believe. Here is a link to the packet I purchased. http://www.marineboutique.com.au/content/view/126/68/

That’s great! A shaggy cat? Will still have the same needs. How about a fish or reptile?

Or a sphinx cat? I read that the hairless cats are very social and like to cuddle. No fur grooming required but they require more washing because they produce lots of skin oils. Isn’t that wild? A cat taking baths??

Wild indeed. Sounds like you gain something and you lose something with that one, Esther. 😂

Ha! Unfortunately shaggy cats needs lots of grooming as well. I suspect Jason may need to think about his choice for a pet a little more. A fun tale, Norah. 🙂

Very cute, Norah. How about a dog that doesn’t shed? We brush our dog nearly every day and at certain times of the year it’s a wonder she has any hair left.

Thanks, Pete. I’m neither a dog nor a cat person. I’ve never owned a pet (other than a Siamese Fighting Fish and caterpillars as they grew into butterflies) so I don’t have much idea about that. 😉😂
