The current prompt at the Carrot Ranch is to In 99 words (no more, no less), write a story about two who can keep a secret. Is the secret between them or is one keeping a secret from the other. Who are they? What remains unknown? What is revealed? Go where the prompt leads!
Like adults, some children can be better than others at keeping a secret. It may depend on how interesting the secret is and what the consequences may be for telling it. Regardless of age, people often have a desire to share a secret, at least once. And that’s okay, as long as the next person swears they won’t tell. I’ve eavesdropped on a couple of children with a secret to share. I can’t tell you what their secret is though, as, you know, it’s a secret.
Do you want to know a secret?
‘Wanna know something?’
‘What?’
‘A secret.’
‘Uh-huh.’
‘Billie said I couldn’t tell anyone, but you’re not just anyone. I’ll tell you, but you mustn’t tell anyone. Okay?’
‘Okay.’
Josie bent close and cupped her hand around Daisy’s ear. ‘Swzh, swzh, swzh.’
Daisy giggled and automatically swiped her ear, accidentally hitting Josie on the nose.
‘What d’you do that for?’
‘It tickled. Tell me again, but don’t tickle this time.’
Billie loomed over them. ‘Hey. What’s going on?’
‘Um. Josie’s just telling me something.’
‘Um. It’s not your secret.’
‘It’s another Billie.’
Josie kicked Daisy, purposefully.
‘Why’d you do that?’
How could I write a post about secrets without sharing this wonderful song?
Thank you for reading. I appreciate your feedback. Please share your thoughts.
I read about a weathly recluse who was able to keep her secret – but in the end it turned up. She wasn’t who folks thought she was, and after her husband – who knew her secret passed… she lived in fear of others finding out. A sad way to live.

Very sad. That’s just one problem with secrets.

Secrets are scary, because they always come out, and one can get in trouble if they’re to blame for the outing of the secret. This is a sweet secret story – and the song. …. Perfection. 🙂

I agree that secrets can be scary, and sometimes too difficult to keep.

A few hours after I read your story, the Beatles song “Listen, I’ve got a secret” came on the car radio. I smiled and sent a “HI!” to you.

Secrets are a burden, I guess that’s why people (of all ages) tend to want to disperse the weight of them. Daisy might be tipping the load! Again you capture kids so well.

Ha! Well done. Sadly, once a secret escapes just one person, it’s game over eventually, lol. ❤

That’s too true, Debby. Secrets can be an enormous burden, some too difficult to share, others to not share.

How did I miss this the first time, Norah? Regardless, glad I had the chance to read it. Secrets, how they travel?!

It’s not been there long, Nan. I don’t think you missed it. Thank you for your comment.

I think I have been so out of the keeping up with friends’ writing that I presume I missed it. Regardless, I really liked your Secrets, Norah.

It is! I see I accidentally called you Ritu. Apologies, Norah. The motto is, don’t blog when you’re tired. 🙂

Good one, Norah. One of the usual arguments in 2nd grade was a child whispering something to another child. Someone else in the class decided they must be the topic of the whispering and complained, “Mr. Springer, they’re talking about me.”

It’s funny how ‘we’ (not you and me, of course) tend to think that, if someone is telling secrets, it must be something bad about ‘us’. It must be a touch of paranoia.

lol one of my favourite Beatle songs! I always say tell a ‘secret’ and the one you told will only tell about 3 others x 3 for each of them and so it goes around. Sadly in hospice work I found many need to unburden their ‘secret’ to leave peacefully …
I prefer your children’s story 🙂

That’s all so very true, Kate. Some of those secrets are held too long. If only we knew that others have even worse secrets, we might be able to unburden sooner, and enjoy the rest of life.

It’s such a big responsibility to keep a secret, isn’t it? It’s almost mean to ask another to keep a secret.
