The United Nations International Mother Earth Day 2022 is today 22 April.
The day is a call to action. Mother Earth herself is calling us to action because nature is suffering.
While I’m sure you don’t need any reminders, the signs of that suffering include:
- pollution
- extreme heat
- fires
- floods
- drought
- storms
- the pandemic
- vulnerability and extinction of fauna and flora
Humans contribute to the suffering through pollution, deforestation and changes in land-use.
We are all called to take individual, as well as collective, action. As stated on the website:
‘The healthier our ecosystems are, the healthier the planet – and its people. Restoring our damaged ecosystems will help to end poverty, combat climate change and prevent mass extinction. But we will only succeed if everyone plays a part.’
Frankie has an urgent message for all of us.
He tells us there are no excuses and lists 19 of those most often expressed. Perhaps you’ve heard some of them. He tells us how to end the excuses with information and action.
“I’m already doing as much as I can.”
“We’ll lose too many jobs if we phase out fossil fuels.”
“I’m just one person, I can’t make a difference.”
“We need fossil fuels for our economy.”
“I won’t see the effects of climate change in my lifetime.”

Recycling has always been a part of what I do. A good deal of our local waste is turned into energy for our area. I also buy local. When I make errand runs I make sure I have several instead of just one. We can make a difference if we work together.

Well done, Jules. It’s so true that we need to work together.

Great post for Earth Day. We all need to walk the walk. It is overwhelming, and we (I) take baby steps when we (I) need to be running,

That’s right, Marsha, but we all start somewhere. Even baby steps are better than none. (unless we’re wheeling)

Are we wheeling? Maybe free wheeling???

That is one cool dinosaur! The excuse that always gets to me is, “It’s too late for us to change.” it is never too late.

I totally agree, Darlene – it’s never too late!

I so agree with you, Norah, but most people won’t take the smallest of steps to fix things. Like walk when they could drive, or stop using plastic water bottles.
Doesn’t matter. I’ll still do what’s right!

We must all do what we can, Jacqui. Especially when so many won’t. Thank you for doing what’s right!

It is frustrating, being aware of too many ‘scumbag’ people, who either don’t possess full-working brains, or were just dragged up, throwing their rubbish anywhere but in the provided bins. Here in Spain, waste is usually regularly collected, but if only more people really cared! (Gnashing of teeth.)

I agree, Joy. It’s all too common in too many places.

Enjoyed the video, Norah. It’s so sad that kids have generally got the message but the electorate continues to vote for extinction.
