Queensland is my home state and, since we celebrate Queensland Day on 6 June, I thought I’d share a little about my state and its special day.
On 6 June 1859, Queensland separated from New South Wales to become an independent colony. It was awarded this status by Queen Victoria who reigned from 1837 until 1901.

Brisbane, located in the south-east corner of the state, is the state capital.

My good friend is from QLD and I’ve been a few times. Lovely people in that state 😀

Happy Queensland Day, even if it is a few days late. I was unable to see Queensland when I was in Australia. I only saw the western side.

You’ll have to come back to visit the east – both very different.

Thank you for your kind words, Andrea. I am grateful too. The internet allows us to connect with others we would otherwise never meet. Stay safe and well in Canada. 💖

Happy Queensland day, Norah, and I did enjoy learning about your state. But – having looked up your purple orchids to see if they in any way resemble those in my garden – answer: not much – I’ve realised you’ve neglected to tell us something that must delight your young students, that its official name is Dendrobium bigibbum. I also liked that the koala’s main activities are eating and sleeping, but sorry to know they’re on the vulnerable list.

Thank you, Anne. There is much that I omitted. Perhaps that’s a book for another time, another writer. But I think you’re right about the name of the orchid. It would no doubt delight children. Pity I read over it, as I do many scientific names.

Well, I gloss over Latin also but what does it say about me that it jumped out at me? Perhaps that could be the seed of your bestselling picture book.

How do you celebrate? Would you normally have parades, picnics, fireworks? Is that, like so much, altered this year?
I don’t much feel like celebrating fourth of July this year.

Glad you asked that. I was wondering in what way it was marked, if at all.

There is recognition through awards for Queenslanders who have contributed in some meaningful ways to our communities. This year we are urged to thank those who have helped us through this current crisis.

It’s a day for marking the achievements of Queenslanders and the contributions they make to our communities. This year we are encouraged to thank those, such as healthcare workers, who have helped us through the pandemic.
