This week at the Carrot Ranch, Charli Mills challenged writers to In 99 words (no more, no less), write a romance. Focus on the relationship between two people. Build tension and end on a happy(ish) note. Go where the prompt leads!
I have been otherwise occupied the last couple of weeks, working to publisher deadlines that took precedence over my own, and haven’t been able to join in. I couldn’t let this one pass. I hope you like it.
True love
Although he’d written love notes and brought flowers nearly every day, he’d caught her unawares when, one morning, he whispered, “Will you marry me?”
His eyes glistened with hope, but she hesitated. She’d not encouraged him, not that way. How could she have anticipated this?
Crouching to look him in the eyes, she said, “Thank you for the compliment, Josh. You’re very sweet, but I can’t. I’m sorry.”
His lips quivered as he asked, “Why not, Miss Ruby?”
“Josh, I’m already married,” she said, showing her rings.
He was downcast momentarily, then suddenly brightened. “You could get a divorce?”
Thanks for reading. I appreciate your feedback. Please share your thoughts.

Thanks so much, Debby. It’s been a busy year, and more so recently. It’s great to earn a little income from writing though and I have to take the paying jobs when they come along. I’m sorry I haven’t been over to visit you and comment as much as usual. I will get there, eventually. 🙂

Thanks so much for your understanding, and for your congratulations, Debby. I can’t believe I won the TUFF contest. I’m totally blown away. I don’t think I’ve ever won a writing contest before. 🙂

I know what you mean Norah. Praise and a great book review can certainly make someone’s day! But I’m just saying what’s in my heart. I just call them as I see them. ❤ And you are most deserved. xx

That is well done, Norah. Spot on.
I tried responding earlier but was on the road and my new fangled machine and I are still having difficulties when it comes to wordpress.
What you are busy with is all good. And, while you have been less present than usual, it just so happens that Aussie has been around Carrot Ranch so it all works out.
Take care, Buddy.

Thanks so much, D. I’m sure you’ve received many proposals over the years.
No worries about your ‘later’ response. I’m weeks behind with my reading and responding. Tech problems are a pain at the best of times. Worse when away from our comfort zone.
I’m pleased Aussie has been filling in for me but I don’t like to miss out on the fun either. 🙂

Many preschool teachers do, Jim. I’m pleased you saw it as authentic. It can be good for you to have a ‘little’ competition at times. 🙂

Thanks, Kate. I’ve been freelancing for three educational publishers this year. All different sorts of jobs but all educational. Keeps me on my toes and it’s nice to do something with (a little) financial reward.

I don’t know about talent, Kate. It’s mostly hard work. 🙂

That’s true. I have done the training and constantly read in an attempt to keep abreast, but it still requires a lot of research and hard work. I appreciate your support.

Good to see you surface from deadlines with a sweet romance, Norah! Your presense has been missed. I hope there are good outcomes to the deadlines.

The work and deadlines continue. I just gave myself a brief (99 word) break. The work I do for my own sites doesn’t pay. This other work pays a little, which is nice. 🙂
